Colostrum and osteoporosis
What is Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a bone disease, which can lead to an increased risk of bone fracture. The mineral density [BMD] of bone is lowered, the structure is damaged and the amount of different proteins in bone is altered. It is more common in women than men.
How holvita™ colostrum can help people with osteoporosis
Colostrum's main factors that have an important role in bone regeneration are lactoferrin which has the ability to stimulate bone forming cells and growth factors especially Insulin-like growth factor-I (IgF-I) growth factor which has too been found to stimulate bone regeneration. Colostrum may help with the regeneration of osteoclasts that break down old bone, and osteoblasts which form new bone. Healthy bone needs continual regeneration and osteoporosis occurs when there is imbalance in this process. Growth factors support cooperation between the immune, nervous and hormonal systems that maintain healthy homoeostasis under normal circumstances. It was found that taking supplements of colostrum, which contains lactoferrin and important growth factors, may help those at risk to control the onset of osteoporosis as it has bone building properties. “Lactoferrin may therefore have a physiological role in bone growth, and a potential therapeutic role in osteoporosis.” (J Cornish)
Professor Jill Cornish said:
"This is what differentiates lactoferrin and makes it so exciting - it's a double whammy if you like, inhibiting the formation of cells that re-absorb bone and stimulating the cells that form bone."
"We have discovered two new receptors on the bone-forming cells and lactoferrin is working through at least one of these to promote bone growth. So we think we have discovered a new anabolic (cell growth and differentiation) pathway in bone,"
"This is significant because other molecules may be working through these receptors leading to new treatment options."
