Colostrum and colitis
About Colitis
Colitis causes inflammation of the large intestine or colon. It is a chronic inflammatory condition and can last for decades. The colon is part of the gastrointestinal tract where all wastage is stored. Colitis is divided into ulcerative colitis, ulcers and inflammation (for Crohn's disease see here)
What are the symptoms?
Patients with the above named conditions have symptoms of abdominal pain, tenderness of the abdomen, rectal bleeding, tenderness in the abdomen, swelling of the colon tissue, redness of the surface of the colon, blood in stool, rapid weight loss, aches and pains within the joints, ulceration of the colon and diarrhoea.
Causes
The cause of the disease is not really known. It has been thought an allergy or infection are the possible causes. It is believed that ulcerative colitis could be an autoimmune condition, where the body is attacking its own cells and tissue. In ulcerative colitis, the inner tissue of the lining of the colon is attacked by the body's own antibodies. The inflammation could also be caused by enteroinvasive E.coli, which is an infectious bacteria. It invades the intestinal wall and kills intestinal cells, causing inflammation in the large intestine, generally referred to as colitis; one of the symptoms is bloody diarrhoea.
How holvita™ colostrum can help people with colitis?
The high level of colostrum's antibodies (immunoglobulins) can help in the fight against E-coli infection and help to prevent complications associated with E-coli bacteria.
In the case of autoimmune disease, colostrum can help to regulate the immune responses with the effect of lactoferrin; this colostrum protein can help to regulate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which is believed to trigger the inflammation. Cell and repair growth factors and other factors in colostrum, for example Insulin-like growth factor-I (IgF-I), can help to seal gut ulceration and enhance the intestinal immunity. Kenneth D Johnson said “colostrum may be the key to pathogen removal and intestinal healing” (Beth M. Ley)
The growth factors have been found to reduce gastro-intestinal problems in experimental and clinical studies. The use of colostrum should be considered for treatment of ulcerative colitis and other inflammatory bowel diseases. (Editors of The Doctors' Prescription for Healthy Living Magazine, 2005)
As reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition July 2000 colostrum sumplementation may be of particular value to young children.
Our holvita™ colostrum supplementation can be a great benefit to people suffering with colitis.
