Colostrum and leaky gut
About leaky gut
Leaky gut syndromes are clinical disorders associated with increased intestinal permeability [small holes]. It is damage done to the bowel lining, caused by antibiotics, toxins, poor diet, parasites and infections or by the over-reaction of the immune system to a specific food or substance. The hyper immune system attacks its own tissue cells and destroys them (see Inflammatory bowel disease)
making the intestine's lining vulnerable to infections.
Examples of diseases associated with leaky gut syndromes are infectious bowel diseases, chronic inflammatory arthritis and skin conditions like acne, psoriasis and dermatitis; diseases triggered by food allergy or specific food intolerance, including eczema, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic hepatitis, chronic pancreatitis and cystic fybrosis. Leaky gut syndrome may also be caused by the long term use of non-steroid-inflammatory-drugs.
When the intestinal mucosa (intestinal lining) is damaged it has increased susceptibility to viral, bacterial and fungi infections leading to leaky gut syndrome.
Signs and symptoms
The symptoms of a leaky gut vary, people can suffer from Abdominal pain, (chronic), bloating, excessive flatulence, gluten intolerance (celiac disease), malnutrition, migraines, muscle cramps, multiple chemical sensitivities, myofascial pain, low immunity, bladder infections, swollen lympth glands, food allergies constipation, diarhhoea, liver dysfunction. abdominal spasms, tiredness and chronic fatigue.
How holvita™ colostrum can help people suffering with a leaky gut
“Colostrum works to heal the lining of the intestinal tract, sealing abnormal holes that cause a whole cascade of events known as leaky gut syndrome. When leaky gut is healed it becomes much less susceptible to Candida”. (Editors Of The Doctors' Prescription For Healthy Living Magazine).
Colostrum can help by strengthening the immune system and contributing to the health of the intestinal tract. Other factors contained in colostrum repeatedly contribute to the healing of the intestinal lining; in some cases of autoimmune disease we found, that triggering agents filter from the “leaky” gut into the bloodstream. (As above Chapter 6, p68-71)
Because of colostrum's ability to reduce leaky gut, it can be used to enhance uptake of nutrients and offers protection against toxins and pathogens. Specifically, lactoferrin which inhibits growth of bacteria, viruses and fungi, growth factors supporting the growth and regeneration of the intestinal lining and Proline-Rich-Polypeptide (PRP) which is a powerful regulator of the immune system in the cause of autoimmune diseases.
Donald Henderson, M.D., M.P.H., a gastroenterologist and chief of staff at Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles, is one who recommends colostrum as a digestive treatment.
"Colostrum has the greatest components of ingredients directed toward the digestive tract," said Henderson. "Its growth factors help cells of the digestive tract redevelop themselves and it also has immune factors that re-establish the immunity of the gastrointestinal tract and kill off bad bacteria that is overgrown."
It is clear people with digestive problems may benefit greatly from our holvita™ high grade colostrum.
